Stadt Hemmoor

Description
Set in the idyllic landscape of the Cuxhaven district, on the western bank of the Oste River, lies the charming small town of Hemmoor. Known for its unique blend of industrial heritage and present-day natural paradise, Hemmoor offers a fascinating destination for visitors.
The town's most famous attraction is the Chalk Lake. Formed from a former chalk quarry that produced cement for over 110 years, the lake today, with a depth of up to 60 meters, is an internationally renowned diving paradise. Its clear, cold underwater world with sunken objects from the former cement production attracts sport divers from around the globe year-round.
Hemmoor's rich industrial history lives on in the German Cement Museum Hemmoor and the Hemmoorium – House of Hemmoor History. Here, visitors can dive into the past and admire fossils from the chalk period, among other exhibits.
A landmark of the region is the nearby Osten-Hemmoor suspension ferry over the Oste. This historic structure is one of the last eight suspension ferries still existing worldwide and was designated a “Historic Landmark of Engineering in Germany” by the Federal Chamber of Engineers in 2009.
Hemmoor lies on the border between geest and marsh and is surrounded by charming natural landscapes perfect for hiking, cycling (for example on the German Ferry Road or the Oste Cycle Route), and nature watching.
In Hemmoor, traces of past industry blend with vibrant nature, offering a distinctive northern German experience – a place that promises both relaxation and adventure.
