Description

The Steinerne Brücke in Weilburg is an impressive stone arch bridge from 1769, stretching 83 meters and featuring five basket arches covered with Lahn marble.

In the middle of the bridge stands a war memorial from 1923, showing a woman with two small children, commemorating the fallen of World War I. A replica was installed in 2006 after the original was destroyed in 1945.

Also especially beautiful are the two historic Baroque bridge houses with mansard hip roofs on the Westerwald side, which together with the Weilburg post office form a Baroque postal square.

The bridge has a rich history: since the 14th century, various wooden and stone bridges have existed here, serving for centuries as one of the few vehicle routes between Wetzlar and Limburg.

During construction of the current bridge in the 1760s, many Catholic workers from the Westerwald were involved, which led to the resumption of Catholic services in Weilburg after about 200 years.

After severe destruction in World War II, the bridge was quickly restored and renovated several times, especially in 1947 and 1988.
