Description

Straußenfarm Emminghausen in Wermelskirchen is dedicated to breeding these impressive flightless birds in a local setting. Five breeding groups continuously ensure new offspring. On the farm run by Klaus Stöcker, which offers natural living conditions across about eight hectares of meadowland, the animals thrive.

In spring, the farm houses over 150 ostriches; starting at Easter, the population grows approximately every 14 days. Visitors have the chance to observe the smallest ostrich chicks from as early as their third day of life. The unique characteristics of the black chicks are explained during the well-guided tours lasting about an hour. These tours provide extensive knowledge about these fast-running birds and also include a section about the bison enclosure, where new calves have been recorded since 2017.

The attached farm shop offers a selection of ostrich-related products. These include dusters made from ostrich feathers, artistic items such as jewelry and lamps made from eggshells, as well as leather goods like handbags and wallets. Additionally, ostrich meat is available, known for its tasty, low-fat, and protein-rich qualities.

Visits to the farm are only possible as part of guided tours. A special tour called "Ostriches Up Close" allows 60 minutes within the animals’ natural habitat. During this time, visitors can enter the enclosure, interact with the ostriches, and participate in feeding them.
