Description

Tierpark Hagenbeck is a zoo in Hamburg. Located in the Stellingen district, the zoo is family-owned, as is the Tropen-Aquarium Hagenbeck, which opened next door in 2007. It traces its origins back to Carl Hagenbeck senior’s Carl Hagenbeck’s Trading Menagerie at Spielbudenplatz in St. Pauli, founded in 1863 and moved by Carl Hagenbeck junior to the Neuer Pferdemarkt in 1866.

On May 7, 1907, Hagenbeck opened the world’s first zoo without cages at the current location outside the city. The zoo is now part of Hamburg’s Eimsbüttel district, is commonly just called Hagenbeck by locals, and was celebrated by Richard Germer in the song Geh’n wir mal zu Hagenbeck.
