Tierpark Sababurg

Description
Tierpark Sababurg is one of the top attractions in the Reinhardswald Nature Park and the oldest zoological garden in Germany still preserved in its original area. More than 900 animals call the 130-hectare grounds beneath the Sleeping Beauty Castle Sababurg their home.
Whether you visit the ancient wildlife park, children’s zoo, bird of prey station, or the Arche Park with its adjoining farm, there is plenty to experience, discover, and learn at Tierpark Sababurg: feeding goats, rabbits, Mangalitsa pigs, or budgerigars; watching wild boar piglets play; observing wild horses and white deer grazing; or setting off in search of the shy wolves and lynxes…
The Tierpark museum also offers fascinating insights into the park’s history and daily life, as well as interesting facts about the various animal species. And when hunger strikes, there are several dining options available.
Open for you all year round – 7 days a week
The Tierpark is open daily all year long! Various events take place throughout the year, such as the Spring and Autumn markets, medieval spectacle, Christmas market, or theme days focusing on, for example, wolves or honeybees… Regularly scheduled feedings, birds of prey flight shows, and other animal experiences are also offered, which you can book individually.
History of the Tierpark
In 1571, Landgrave Wilhelm IV began establishing the zoological garden at the foot of his hunting castle Sababurg – one of Europe’s earliest zoological gardens. Over the centuries, the park has seen many different uses, sometimes alternating and even coexisting. It was, for example, used at times as a hunting ground or as pasture for horses and young cattle. Many traces of this long and varied history remain today. The Tierpark’s wall and ponds date back to its founding era. The rondel and the adjoining avenues were laid out in the 17th and 18th centuries. Expansive pastures with ancient pollard oaks and hay meadows were created in the 19th and 20th centuries for horses, young cattle, and sheep, and are still preserved today.
