Description
The Urwald vor den Toren der Stadt in Saarbrücken is an exceptional 1,000-hectare nature reserve. It has developed largely without human intervention since 1997, making it one of the few forest wilderness zones on the edge of a major European city 🌳. Here, on winding trails and award-winning hiking paths, including the popular Wilde Netzbachpfad, you can discover an amazing variety of plants and animals that changes throughout the year.
This mixed beech forest is a true treasure trove of biodiversity. Marvel at moss-covered tree trunks, brightly colored mushrooms, and bizarre lichens. Thousands of animal, plant, and fungal species call the Urwald home, including stag beetles, Spanish Flag butterflies, and wildcats.
For young explorers and adventurous teens, there are special offerings: The Urwald offers holiday programs with games, crafts, and forest explorations. Older children can test their wilderness survival skills in multi-day wilderness camps. At Forsthaus Neuhaus, you will also find a modern information center with a multimedia exhibition and an accessible Green Classroom for study groups.
For exploration, a free audio app „Findet Turid“ from NABU Saarland is available, which introduces you to the inhabitants of the Urwald on an entertaining tour. And when hunger strikes, the restaurant at Forsthaus Neuhaus will treat you to regional cuisine and delicious children's meals. 🍽️
