Legend 9

The Wild Hunter near Waldaubach

A butcher had business in Rabenscheid and Waldaubach and was now on his way to Nister with his dog-drawn cart. When he reached the Waldaubacher protective hedge, he heard a terrible racket coming from the Fox’s den—screaming, barking, howling, laughing, roaring as if a whole herd of wild animals had been unleashed. His dogs, who also heard the hellish noise, ran together with the cart he was sitting on at such a frantic, fear-driven pace that their feet barely touched the ground. But the mad chase in the air drew ever closer. Suddenly, the cart was stopped abruptly, and the butcher was hurled in an arc out onto the field. He abandoned the cart and the dogs and ran as fast as he could to Nister. There he said that not even ten horses could bring him back to that place. If that hadn’t been the Wild Hunter, then it could only have been the devil himself. People tried to calm him down and then set out to find the dog cart. At the top of the hill, they found it stuck fast between two piles of road stones. The dogs acted wildly in their fear; but there was no sign of the noise anymore.
