Wittekindsburg
Description
Wittekindsburg is an impressive Iron Age hillfort (3rd–1st century BCE) and an exciting find-spot for children who want to get hands-on with history. On a large site you'll see visible earthworks and partially preserved east and north ramparts. You can see excavations exposed under glass. 🏰
On site you can discover Margarethenkapelle and Kreuzkirche, as well as a café from 1896 with a pointed tower, traces of iron ore mining and the Wittekindsquelle (now dry). The site is partly protected – good for observing plants and wildlife.
For active families the view from the launch ramp for hang gliders is worth it, and you can reach the hillfort via the Wittekindsweg in about half an hour from the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal.
