Description
As one of the most renowned and species-rich zoos in the world, the Zoo Leipzig, founded in 1878, is home to almost 900 species and subspecies.
Since 2000, Zoo Leipzig has been implementing the innovative Zoo of the Future concept, which combines species-appropriate animal husbandry with a commitment to species conservation.
The largest project in the zoo’s successful development is the tropical experience world Gondwanaland. Visitors are transported into a primeval rainforest with more than 24,000 tropical plants and around 300 exotic animals.
Last year, the Kiwara Kopje was opened for the critically endangered black rhinos. In 2016, zoo enthusiasts can look forward to the opening of the koala house, and work will begin on the Asian high mountain world Himalaya, which will be home to snow leopards and red pandas in the future. With the completion of all master plan projects in 2020, the zoo will include the themed worlds Africa, Asia, Pongoland, Founder’s Garden, Gondwanaland, and South America.
