Description

Starting December 20, 2026, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate opens its doors to a cultural history exhibition about the legendary Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary.

Under the title "Sisi – Misunderstood & Immortal," the major exhibition shines a light on the life and work of a woman who is one of the most famous personalities of the 19th century.

Known as "Sisi," Elisabeth married the young Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I when she was just 16 years old. But the seemingly fairytale wedding was soon followed by disillusionment and tragic blows. Faced with high expectations, the young empress nearly broke. Travel, an elaborate beauty and slimming regimen, and sports became her focus over the next decades. Sisi's desire for self-determination and ultimately her tragic death created a unique myth.

With over 200 objects from major museums and private collections from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and neighboring European countries, visitors experience a multifaceted portrayal of an empress who sought her path between duty, freedom, and personal fate.
