Description

Mounted on horseback, Saint Martin welcomes families and groups of children at the LVR Open-Air Museum Kommern. Afterwards, he will lead the “Saint Martin’s Parade Like in the Old Village,” which winds through the museum’s buildings lit by barn lanterns and candle holders, and the surrounding forest. Just like in the legend, Martin will share his cloak with a beggar by the large bonfire.

An old tractor team with Saint Martin’s geese and goslings accompanies the procession. Music bands play Saint Martin’s songs that are now hardly known. Before the parade begins, a "museum farmer’s wife" will tell the legends surrounding Saint Martin in a barn.

Guests who bring traditional Saint Martin’s lanterns, such as turnip lanterns, young and old, are especially welcome. Every year, hundreds of families from across the Rhineland take part in this Saint Martin’s parade. At the end of the lantern procession, Saint Martin hands out Saint Martin’s buns in the historic dance hall, along with cocoa, children's punch, and mulled wine for the adults.

“Pay What You Want Day.” On this day, no regular admission tickets are sold. Visitors decide for themselves how much they wish to pay for their visit to the LVR Open-Air Museum Kommern. They can set their own admission price and consider how much the museum visit is worth to them.
