Description

Today's Botanischer Garten Frankfurt am Main belonged to Goethe University Frankfurt until the end of 2011 and has since been owned by the city of Frankfurt. The garden was founded between 1763 and 1774 by the Dr. Senckenberg Foundation, established by Johann Christian Senckenberg. Initially, it was laid out southeast of the Eschenheimer Tower, covering about one hectare between what are now Bleichstrasse and Stiftstrasse. Senckenberg, together with the first foundation botanist Johann Heinrich Bäumerth, planned the Frankfurt Botanical Garden based on the model of the garden established by Carl von Linné in Uppsala, but did not live to see its completion.
