Description

Burg Pottenstein offers you a spectacular view of the town and the surrounding countryside – perfect for enjoying the park-like upper castle garden together with your family. 🏰

In the palas, you will find three fully furnished showrooms that bring you up close to history. It also gets exciting in the cellar vault with objects from the Thirty Years’ War and military finds – perfect for anyone eager to discover history.

Other highlights include the well house with historical household items and the tithe barn from 1580/81. There are exhibitions about the tithe system and the history of the castle lords – a fascinating glimpse into life in days gone by.

Since 2007, the large permanent exhibition “Crown, Bread, and Roses. 800 Years of Elisabeth of Thuringia (1207–2007)” has been on display at the castle. Burg Pottenstein was the only location in Bavaria chosen for this – a cultural experience you shouldn’t miss!

In the oldest part of the palas, a memorial room commemorates St. Elisabeth of Thuringia’s visit in 1228. The castle’s long history, spanning nearly 700 years under the Bishopric of Bamberg and the family Wintzingerode since 1918, makes a visit especially exciting. Meet the first lord of the castle, Aribonen Botho, who called himself Count of Pottenstein in 1070 and was a confidant of Emperor Henry IV – history you can touch!
