Description

The Deutsch-deutsche Freilandmuseum invites families on a unique journey back to the 1970s and 1980s to experience the former German border in an authentic way.

Here you can explore the original border installations of the former GDR – from watchtowers to fences and signal towers, all the way to a minefield, creating a vibrant and educational atmosphere.

A real highlight is the former border watchtower with an observation platform, which not only offers an impressive view but also features an exciting historical exhibition (access only during guided tours).

There is also a reconstructed one-man bunker from the 1960s, giving fascinating insights into the defense mechanisms of the border troops – ideal for children from around 6 years old who find history and military architecture exciting.

On the Bavarian side, historical panels provide information about the Cold War and border controls – a great addition for anyone wanting to learn more about that period.

  • Panoramic views from the nearby Rappershausen observation tower over the historic border region

  • Guided hikes along the historic border zone with captivating nature and history facts

  • Protected natural and archaeological site with diverse flora and fauna to discover
