Kreisgalerie
Description
The Kreisgalerie in Mellrichstadt showcases a fascinating variety of art styles across three floors – all under one roof.
Here you will find exclusively works by local artists, many of whom considered the Rhön their homeland. The exhibition is divided thematically into different rooms, for example featuring paintings from the early 20th century or landscape watercolors from the Rhön-Grabfeld region.
One special room is dedicated to the famous Rococo painter Andreas Herrlein, while the middle floor presents 20th-century watercolors and gouaches illustrating the shift from realistic to expressive landscape painting.
You will also see works by well-known regional artists who captured Rhön landscapes and moods in vivid colors and various styles such as Impressionism, Expressionism, and New Objectivity. On the top floor, contemporary objects and sculptures await you, including pieces from the internationally renowned woodcarving school in Bischofsheim.
A particular highlight is the portraits of intriguing women by the famous regional painter Hugo Freiherr von Habermann, who was influenced by Impressionism. Overall, the gallery offers a high-quality and diverse collection of local art that pleasantly surprises.
