Description
## Brief description
Ferropolis near Gräfenhainichen amazes with gigantic open-cast mining machines and offers an unparalleled backdrop for concerts and festivals. Perfect for technology and culture enthusiasts of all ages.
## Description
Ferropolis, the "City of Iron," is located on a peninsula in the Gremminer See near Gräfenhainichen. Originally a site of intensive lignite mining, the former Golpa-Nord open-cast mine, closed in 1991, has been transformed into an impressive industrial monument. The idea for its redevelopment came about in 1992 at the Bauhaus Dessau, and the "City of Iron" opened to visitors in 2000. Here stand five gigantic machines, including excavators and stackers with names like Mad Max, Big Wheel, and Medusa, reminding visitors of the industrial past and now rising as steel sculptures in the landscape.
The open-air museum offers a unique insight into the history of lignite mining and its associated technical achievements. Visitors can experience the huge machines up close, climb on some of them, and enjoy the impressive views. An exhibition in the former 30 kV power station provides information about the regional mining history.
Besides its historical significance, Ferropolis also has a cultural dimension. The setting is regularly used for large concerts and festivals, including the Melt! Festival and Splash!, which attract visitors from all over Europe. From rock to classical music, from open-air concerts to theater performances – it is a lively place where past and present meet.
Ferropolis is part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage and a key point on the regional ERIH route in Saxony-Anhalt. With its mix of history, technology, and culture, it is a great destination for tourists of all ages.
