Description
## Brief Description
The Melanchthonhaus in Wittenberg, a magnificent Renaissance building, offers fascinating insights into the life and work of Philipp Melanchthon, an important reformer and companion of Martin Luther.
## Description
The Melanchthonhaus in Wittenberg is one of the city's finest townhouses and a significant historic building. Built in the Renaissance style in 1536, it served as the home of Philipp Melanchthon, one of the leading reformers and close associates of Martin Luther. The house has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996 and has been carefully restored over the centuries to preserve its historic character.
A visit to the Melanchthonhaus takes you directly into the era of the Reformation. The faithfully restored architecture and lovingly designed interiors give a vivid impression of Melanchthon's daily life. The permanent exhibition "Philipp Melanchthon: Life – Work – Impact" spans 600 m² and displays exhibits such as manuscripts, prints, paintings, and busts. A special highlight is a restored, larger-than-life portrait of Melanchthon dating from the era. For children, the Melanchthonhaus offers special discovery opportunities. Equipped with a key, young visitors can open hidden chests and cupboards filled with exciting surprises and games.
A child-friendly guided tour through the house is led by Melanchthon’s fictional daughter Magdalena, who vividly shares insights into life 500 years ago. Children can try on medieval costumes, smell kitchen scents, and sit at the family table. The historic garden displays medicinal plants from Melanchthon’s time, although not directly based on his own plans. Here visitors can explore the variety of medicinal plants and relax in a peaceful setting. The Melanchthonhaus is not only a valuable historic heritage but also impressively illustrates Melanchthon’s contribution to the Reformation and the development of the education system. The exhibition offers fascinating insights into the life and work of this remarkable scholar and makes the visit an educational experience for the entire family.
