Description

The Fossilienmuseum Dotternhausen fascinates with fossils that are about 180 million years old – directly from the oil shale. Especially impressive are the well-preserved marine creatures from the Jurassic period.

On display are extraordinary prehistoric treasures such as pterosaurs, crocodiles, ichthyosaurs, crinoids, and numerous small fossils. These come not only from the Dotternhausen oil shale but also from neighboring Jurassic strata.

Thanks to the extraction of the oil shale, experts were able to recover, carefully prepare, and scientifically study these finds. A special highlight awaits you at the Klopfplatz, where you can get hands-on yourself.
