Frankfurter Stadtwald
Description
Frankfurter Stadtwald is the municipal forest owned by the city of Frankfurt am Main. Strictly speaking, it is a 5,785-hectare forest area in the south of Frankfurt, of which 3,866 hectares lie within the city limits. The Stadtwald south of the Main covers about 14% of the city’s area, spanning roughly 35 km². It originated in the 14th century from part of the historic Wildbann Dreieich, a forest reserve owned by the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. This forest area has been owned by the city of Frankfurt since 1372. Today, the forest is mainly used for education, leisure, and recreation, with some continued forestry and agricultural use.
