Goldmuseum Theuern

The Goldmuseum Theuern takes you on an exciting journey through the geological formation of gold and the history of gold prospecting. You’ll learn how natural gold deposits are discovered – did you know that almost all the waters in the Thuringian Slate Mountains contain gold?

The exhibition clearly shows how rock was crushed in the Middle Ages: a small model of a stamp mill demonstrates this traditional method of extracting gold. You can also explore a reconstructed gold washing tub and various gold pans.

This gives you a hands-on insight into the craft of gold washing and the historical techniques of the region.
