Description
The exhibition about the Münchner Kaiserburg in the late Gothic vaulted cellar of the Alten Hof tells the story of Munich’s oldest power center, its most famous resident, Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria, as well as the city’s history.
Multimedia presentations and films about Ludwig of Bavaria, the Alten Hof, and Munich’s city history offer fascinating insights—including the legend of the Monkey Tower and Munich's development under the Wittelsbach dynasty.
Interactive highlights include a holographic display of historical artifacts and atmospheric sound effects that recreate the sounds of past eras by lifting metal rings.
The exhibition features a cross-section of the medieval city wall from around 1200, part of Munich’s original fortifications, and presents the city’s history from its beginnings until 1918. The oldest city walls and historic gates are visible.
Replicas of Emperor Ludwig’s golden bull, coins, medals, and seals illustrate the mindset, craftsmanship, and the evolution of Munich’s coat of arms—from the monk to the Münchner Kindl.
For children from 7 years old, there is a four-page scavenger hunt that playfully guides through the exhibition, including puzzles and, on request, group activity materials.
