Description

The Kleinbahn Philippsheim - Binsfeld, popularly known as the "Schnaufbähnchen," was an important narrow-gauge railway that operated from 1900 to 1965 between Philippsheim and Binsfeld. This historic steam-powered railway covered an eight-kilometer route climbing 120 meters in elevation. It originally transported goods from the Binsfeld clay pits and brickworks to the Cologne-Trier Eifel line. In the 1950s, two locomotives with 200 hp each, 47 freight cars, and 38 wagons were in service. The decline of passenger traffic caused by the introduction of a bus line and the shift of freight transport to trucks led to the railway's closure in 1965. Today, a well-preserved locomotive in Binsfeld commemorates this historic connection. Part of the former track was converted in 2010 into a bike path that connects to the Kyll bike trail, offering a scenic route from Kronenburger See to Trier.
