Lohmühlenmuseum

The Lohmühlenmuseum takes you on a journey into the history surrounding the forest as a living and working environment. You’ll see firsthand how the water of the Apfelstädt was once used as a power source and can admire the original workshops along with a fully operational tanning machine.

Historical scenes like the miller’s home, a schoolroom, and doctor’s and dentist’s offices vividly showcase life and development in the area, bringing the past to life.

The museum is beautifully situated in a valley with a large outdoor area, perfect for families. Nearby, you’ll find a special fossil site with a dinosaur trail and quarry, as well as an animal enclosure with red deer and fallow deer – ideal destinations for family adventures.

For nature-loving families, the surroundings offer many opportunities for hiking and climbing along extensive trails. Cyclists can use the Apfelstädt bike path, which connects the Rennsteig hiking trail with regional towns and runs right past the museum.
