Rennsteiggarten Oberhof
Description
The Rennsteiggarten Oberhof showcases nearly 4,000 different mountain plant species from Europe, Asia, North and South America, New Zealand, and the Arctic – a diverse botanical garden that especially delights families interested in nature.
Set around the Pfanntalskopf, it offers ideal conditions for mountain flora with an average temperature of 4.2 °C and about 150 days of snow cover each year. This allows you to experience typical growth and bloom patterns up close.
The garden includes a nature reserve garden with specially protected plants from the Thuringian mountain region, perfect for nature and environmental education for children and adults alike.
Annual highlights include the Flower Festival at peak bloom, the Herb Days featuring exciting information about medicinal plants to try and purchase, as well as the Autumn Festival with live music and craft exhibitions – ideal events for shared family experiences.
Since 2005, the Mushroom Days with mushroom consultations and species identification have invited mushroom lovers from the entire family.
The largely barrier-free circular path with switchbacks leads to the Pfanntalskopf viewpoint and is well suited for wheelchair users, guests with limited mobility, seniors, and families with strollers.
Additionally, you can experience traditional craftsmanship through models of a historic charcoal burner’s kiln and hut – fascinating insights into the region’s history.
