## Brief Description

Located at Andreaskirchplatz in Eisleben, the museum Luthers Sterbehaus offers visitors insight into the last days and hours of the Reformer, who returned to his birthplace at the end of his life.

## Description

After a varied life, Martin Luther finally returns to his birthplace Eisleben, where he died on February 18, 1546. Due to a mistake by a later chronicler, it was long believed that Luther’s place of death was the house at Andreaskirchplatz 7. Today we know that the Reformer most likely died in the house at Markt 56, which also belonged to the Drachstedt family where Luther was a guest at the time.

However, the museum about Luther’s final journey is housed in the building at Andreaskirchplatz and – like the birth house – serves as a draw for tourists. The exhibition "Luthers letzter Weg" (Luther’s Last Way) traces the Reformer’s last days and hours. It also provides an overview of how Martin Luther himself dealt with death and dying. Throughout his life, he experienced grief both as a mourner and affected person as well as a comforter and pastor. It is therefore no surprise that these roles influenced his work and the theology he lived.

Highlights of the exhibition include the so-called death rooms – Luther’s bedroom and death room. Thanks to a detailed and period-accurate reconstruction, these rooms offer a historical glimpse into the time when Luther returned to Eisleben and died there. Among the exhibits is also the original funeral cloth that covered Martin Luther’s coffin.

If you visit Eisleben and want to explore the Reformer’s life stages, you should not miss the Sterbehaus. After an extensive multi-year restoration, the museum rooms now shine in renewed splendor and have even been honored with various architecture awards.
