Description

Mühlenteichpark is a public green space of about three hectares located in the Hamburg district of Wandsbek. It surrounds the historic Mühlenteich pond, part of the Wandse stream, which was created in the 16th century by the then Wandsbek estate lord Heinrich Rantzau to operate a water mill. The construction of the mill dam at the time led to border disputes with the Hamburg Heiligengeist Hospital, which owned the neighboring villages of Eilbek and Barmbek, because the dammed Mühlenteich flooded not only the farmlands of Barmbek farmers but also an important ford between Barmbek and Wandsbek. The so-called “Rantzaustein,” a boundary stone from 1573 that sits by the Mühlenstraße bridge since early 2026, commemorates the resolution of the dispute. The mill operation, which was later also used as a bark mill and eventually converted to steam power, lasted until 1907 when it burned down.
