Museum Goldenes Dachl
Description
The Museum Goldenes Dachl is housed in a historic building whose landmark is the bay window with the golden roof. The museum has been based here since 1996, initially under the name Museum Maximilianeum. After an extensive expansion and renovation, it reopened in 2007 as Museum Goldenes Dachl.
The bay window is covered with 2,657 fire-gilded copper shingles that make it glow with a warm golden shine. The reliefs show Emperor Maximilian I with his two wives, a chancellor, a court jester, a Moorish dancer, and numerous coats of arms. So you can go on a treasure hunt and look for the figures.
A hobby historian claims to have fully deciphered the inscription on the bay window in 2020. According to him, it reads “Ego sum lux mundi” (“I am the light of the world”). However, this is a claim and not an established fact.
