Otto-König-von-Griechenland-Museum
Description
The Otto-König-von-Griechenland-Museum is a small but refined museum attracting over a thousand visitors annually – from local school classes to international experts. It focuses on the life and work of King Otto I of Greece, not on the local history of Ottobrunn.
The collection includes more than 200 objects related to Philhellenism, the Greek War of Independence, and King Otto's court, including silver, porcelain, clocks, and jewelry. Especially worth seeing is the portrait gallery with oil paintings and watercolors by artists such as Heß, Heideck, and Perlberg. Many exhibits have Greek inscriptions to warmly welcome the many curious visitors from Greece.
A highlight of the collection is a gilded equestrian statue of King Otto in traditional Greek national costume dating from around 1835, acquired through public donations. Each year in late November or early December, a museum evening takes place featuring lectures by renowned figures and social gatherings.
The museum celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special event attended by around 200 guests from expert circles and the local community. Young Greek award winners visit the museum to learn more about Bavarian-Greek relations and the modern Greek state.
