Schloss Wernigerode

Description
Brief description of Schloss Wernigerode
with the St. Pantaleon and Anna Castle Church & special exhibition rooms
Description Schloss Wernigerode® brings history lessons to life when it comes to Count Otto of Stollberg-Wernigerode. He rose to become Bismarck's deputy and thus Vice Chancellor of the German Empire. In this role, he was significantly involved in the social legislation in Germany that is still partly valid today. The building presents a different architectural exterior every 45° angle. The more than 40 exhibition rooms, with their still numerous furnishings, bring the life of the late 19th-century "jet set" vividly to life.
Originally a medieval castle, Schloss Wernigerode® was meant to secure the path of the medieval German emperors during their hunting trips in the Harz mountains. In the course of the 16th century, the castle was converted into a Renaissance fortress. Severely damaged during the Thirty Years' War, Count Ernst of Stolberg-Wernigerode began transforming the castle ruins into a romantic baroque residence in the late 17th century.
The most significant renovation in the castle's history was commissioned by Count Otto of Stolberg-Wernigerode. Schloss Wernigerode® became a flagship building of North German historicism. Since 1930, parts of the castle have been open to the public. Two museum tours guide visitors through original living rooms of the German high nobility.
You should definitely include a visit to the high-quality special exhibitions.
