Description

The Schlossgarten in Stuttgart is a 600-year-old park covering 64 hectares. It starts at the Neues Schloss in the city center and follows the former course of the now-piped Nesenbach stream down to the Neckar River. Its current appearance dates back to the Federal Garden Show in 1961, during which much of the historically developed structures in the Upper and Middle Schlossgarten were largely destroyed, and the Federal Garden Show in 1977, when the Lower Schlossgarten was carefully restored. Since 1987, efforts have been underway to restore the classical garden architecture with the Oval Lake and the Park Avenue, originally designed by the Württemberg court architect Nikolaus Friedrich Thouret. As part of Stuttgart 21, major redesigns are planned due to construction work and the subsequent allocation of parts of the current railway facilities.
