St. Prokulus Kirche und Museum
Description
The small church of St. Prokulus is an art-historical gem that, despite intensive international research, still holds many secrets. Experts disagree about when the church was built. It likely dates back to the late 8th century.
Inside the church is a unique cycle of frescoes. The paintings are among the earliest examples of pre-Romanesque wall painting in the Alpine region. Here too, there are various dating theories, ranging from the mid-7th century to the 10th century.
The modern, didactically well-designed Prokulus Museum houses impressive archaeological finds from around the St.-Prokulus-Kirche and takes visitors on an exciting journey through time in multimedia stations, from Late Antiquity through the Early Middle Ages to the time of the plague in the 17th century.
