By turning the hand crank at this play station, you can watch the impressive formation of a vortex. Turning the crank slowly causes the water at the edge of the cylinder to rise upward. At the same time, a downward suction forms in the center. As the rotation speed increases, a funnel reaching down to the bottom forms, while the counter vortex rises all the way to the top. The two opposing forces appear as rotating spirals that pull the water downward and push it upward. This is how the vortex creates its own opposing movement.
