High – Someone Always Has Something
A play about intoxication and addiction
Directed by: Rob Vriens
Concept and performance: Jonathan Schyns, Susanne Schyns
Theaterhaus Ensemble Frankfurt
First joint at 13. Party drugs at 15. Benzodiazepines at 17 – then opiates. A “typical” drug career?
The production “High” deals powerfully with consumption, abuse, and society’s handling of medication – especially painkillers and tranquilizers among young people. It raises questions about responsibility, denial, and the fine line between medical help and addiction.
“Was there a moment when you thought: Damn, I’m addicted?” “That thought never really came clearly. It was a big mix of everything: intensifying and at the same time controlling feelings. Pushing feelings away. Feeling safe. Having a crutch. It was everything.”
Developed from personal experience, the story turns into an intense artistic duet on stage between mother and son – spoken, sung, and danced. With “High” they want to start a dialogue: with young people, with parents, with society. About the mechanisms of intoxication and addiction – and how easily consumption can turn into loss of control.
