Psychological puberty is said to begin around the age of thirteen. If you think it’s over by sixteen, you’re mistaken. Because I’m only really in it now, in my early forties! Okay, an artist needs strong feelings. How else could she write moving songs? But I definitely have too many: There’s the urge to save the world, the joy about aging, the fear of getting older, the desire to poison my dog, the guilt over wanting to poison my dog, the longing for great Hollywood love, the craving for casual sex, the hunger for high-calorie food, the fierce determination to write a hit song, the emptiness inside because I’ve been trying to write a hit for years, the unconditional love for my child and the hatred of mothers who are good at crafts. How do you manage all these emotions? How can I filter them? No idea. But I try – in my songs. The multi-award-winning chanson singer and cabaret artist Anna Piechotta, recently honored with the prestigious Bavarian Cabaret Award 2023 (Music), takes a contemplative look in her program “Too Many Emotions” as a middle-aged woman trying to finally own her identity. Whether she succeeds is up for question. But one thing’s certain – it’s going to be funny, witty, and extremely musical.
