Description

Insights into the history of the railway in and around Altenkirchen in the Westerwald

Since the late 19th century, Altenkirchen has been an important railway hub for the Westerwald region. The railway provided work for hundreds of people in the district town and surrounding areas, supporting their families. It was an economic growth driver that energized the entire town and allowed many people to travel. On this guided railway tour, we explore the impressive history of the railway in and around Altenkirchen along the still-existing railway grounds. The railway nearly ran through the upper town. We recognize the great importance of the railway for the people in the region, but we also see why the town suffered so much during World War II. We explore the scale of the old railway facilities and imagine the many impressive steam locomotives whose whistles echoed through the town.
