Description

The Archäologisches Museum der Stadt Kelheim invites you to take a journey through time, from the Neanderthal Age to the Ottonian period, and discover the history of Kelheim and its surroundings.

Upstairs, you'll find an exciting exhibition about Kelheim's city history, featuring the Wittelsbach Duke's castle and the development leading up to the construction of the Main-Danube Canal. Rotating special exhibits constantly offer new insights.

In the museum courtyard, you can admire the original and reconstructed Celtic Oppidum Alkimoennis wall, explore replicas of burial mounds, and see a section of the original Danube riverbed – complete with plenty of information about the archaeological excavations.

The museum holds an extensive collection of artifacts from the Paleolithic era to the Middle Ages. Expert publications and child-friendly museum guides complement the exhibits.

Set in the historic backdrop of the 15th-century Herzogkasten building, the museum, founded in 1908, was awarded the European Museum Special Prize in 1983.
