Burgschloss
Description
Burgschloss Schorndorf is an impressive example of Renaissance architecture featuring a trapezoid-shaped four-wing complex and massive round towers at the corners.
The charming half-timbered courtyard captivates with artistically crafted coats of arms and inscriptions on the towers and entrances, along with a distinctive bay window above the main portal.
The castle was built around 1538 under Duke Ulrich and was part of an extensive defense system that made Schorndorf the strongest fortress town in the duchy.
Despite its fortress-like exterior, the castle’s actual function as a fortress is historically debated due to the delicate half-timbered courtyard inside.
Burgschloss has survived major events, including the great city fire of 1634.
