## Brief Description

Once a monastery, now a high school and museum – Francisceum in Zerbst combines education, history, and culture under one roof.

## Description

Francisceum in Zerbst, whose history dates back to the 13th century, has a rich and eventful past. Originally built as a Franciscan monastery around 1235/45, it transformed into one of the oldest educational institutions in Saxony-Anhalt during the Reformation. Today it houses a modern high school and the city museum, which impressively documents Zerbst's history spanning over 1070 years.

The historic Franciscan monastery is now home to the Gymnasium Francisceum, founded in 1532 as a Latin school. The school's development owes much to Philipp Melanchthon, who advanced educational reforms in the region, and to the Reformation, which secularized the monastery from 1526 onward. Between 1582 and 1798, the "Gymnasium illustre" operated here – a renowned educational institution where theologians from Anhalt were trained.

During a tour through the monastery building, you will experience a unique blend of educational tradition and historic architecture. The old walls tell stories from the Reformation era, and the former chapter hall with its ornaments recalls monastic life. Especially impressive is the historic detention cell, a former lockup adorned with inscriptions from the 17th century. Besides the fascinating history of the place, you can admire a model of Zerbst as it was before destruction in World War II and learn more about the influential princely house of Anhalt-Zerbst in the museum.

The impressive Francisceum library offers a glimpse into the educational world of past centuries. It preserves numerous valuable writings, including manuscripts and incunabula. A significant part of the collection consists of Luther prints and other theological works from the Reformation period, providing deep insight into religious and intellectual history over several centuries. Whether you are a culture lover or history enthusiast – a visit to Francisceum will leave you with unforgettable impressions of Zerbst’s history and traditions.
