Description

The Freiherr-von-Wintzingerode-Park in Bad Sassendorf is located on the outskirts of the town center and offers insights into the local wildlife and plant life. The spacious area allows visitors to have direct encounters with native wild animals. It provides the opportunity to observe fallow deer and peacocks in their natural habitat, offering an authentic nature experience.

Founded in 1960 by the former Soest district director Freiherr von Wintzingerode, the park covers an area of 15.5 hectares. About two-thirds of the terrain consists of deciduous forest and one-third is made up of orchard and meadow areas, creating a diverse ecological environment. The grounds are open to the public and offer a place for nature observation and relaxation. The park’s design promotes interactions between people and animals and emphasizes the importance of such encounters within the context of local biodiversity.

As a measure to support biodiversity, two insect hotels were installed in March 2014. These serve as important nesting and overwintering sites for various insect species such as wild bees and bumblebees. Additionally, a concept for a “green classroom” is being developed to enrich future nature education programs. Visitors who want to explore the park with dogs may do so while adhering to the leash requirement.
