Hummelwerkstatt

Description
The Hummelwerkstatt is a facility of the Naturinformationszentrum Naumburg.
Located at the edge of Naumburg, amid the idyllic Elbeauen, it was set up in a small wooden house. Nature enthusiasts can learn all kinds of interesting facts there about bumblebees, bees, ants, or solitary – that is, not colony-forming – insects.
Report in Natürlich unterwegs
The "Hummelzoo", established in 1994 in cooperation with the Universität Kassel, houses several bumblebee colonies over the summer months. These can be observed in a red-light room in their natural habitat, practically underground. There is also a training room that, using specimens, explains the life cycle of bumblebees and their importance for people. In addition, bumblebee nesting boxes can be found in the adjacent garden and an insect hotel for
solitary insects. Solitary bees can be observed at these nesting aids as well as at ground nests and on flowers.
Since 2005 the Hummelwerkstatt has additionally had two ant terrariums from the Ameisenschutzwarte Hessen, which explain the complex relationships inside an ant colony and the importance of such a colony for the forest ecosystem.
A honeybee observation box shows honeybees with brood and honey combs as well as the bees at work in the nest.
Solitary bees can be observed at nesting aids, at ground nests and on flowers.
Although the offering is primarily aimed at children and
adolescents, all age groups are invited to actively and
playfully
learn more about the lifestyles of fascinating insects.
