Description

## Brief Description

The exhibits at the Danneil Museum in the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel range from archaeological finds to the unique Salzwedel Madonna and the history of the Baumkuchen.

## Description

At the initiative of high school director Johann Friedrich Danneil, the first collection of cultural-historical exhibits was created in the mid-19th century. This formed the foundation of the Salzwedel Museum, which later took his name.

The museum building, the former provost’s house built in half-timbered style, is an eye-catcher in its own right. One of the most valuable exhibits inside is the carved figure of the Salzwedel Madonna, which marks the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. The Weinberg altar is one of the significant works of Lucas Cranach the Younger and reflects the Reformation era. Other of the 16 exhibition areas are devoted to the prehistoric and early history of the region, the Hanseatic period, or the life worlds of the Altmark nobility. The history of the Salzwedel Baumkuchen is also not to be missed.

About 100 meters from the main site is a branch in the birthplace of Jenny von Westphalen. An exhibition is dedicated to the life of Karl Marx’s later wife.
