Description

For centuries, miners dug for ore up here. First with hammer and chisel, later with heavy machinery. Up to 1.000 people lived in the St. Martin mining settlement at 2.355 meters above sea level, far above the tree line. Europe's highest permanent settlement was inhabited until the 1960s. Today, an almost unimaginable 150 km of tunnels run through the mountain massif. Above ground, intensive mining has shaped and reshaped the landscape. The Schneeberg site can only be reached on foot.
