Description

The Mithraeum in Königsbrunn is the only surviving Roman Mithras sanctuary in Bavaria from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, offering families interested in ancient cultures an exciting archaeological experience.

Discover the remains of eight Roman buildings, with the Mithraeum featuring a central room, a long anteroom oriented north-south, and a slightly sunken rectangular apse, providing an impressive insight into ancient architecture.

The Mithras cult depicts Mithras as a world ruler and victorious bull fighter dressed in Persian clothing, accompanied by torchbearers. The rituals of this male mystery cult, with seven initiation levels, took place in a cave-like, dark room – an atmosphere that transports you into the mysterious world of antiquity, offering deeply fascinating stories especially for older children and adults.

The cult was an important predecessor and rival to Christianity and ended in the 4th century when Christianity became the state religion – a fascinating historical context for your visit.
