Description

The Museum Altes Land in Jork reveals how the people in Altes Land lived with water over time and shaped their environment. You can experience firsthand how floods were managed in the past, landscapes were designed, and defenses were built against storm surges.

The exhibition is interactive: with original exhibits like a large water screw, three audio stations, and two media terminals, you dive into the region’s history and soundscape. A special highlight is old fruit-growing machinery, such as an apple sorting machine that marked a milestone in the fruit trade.

Don’t miss the fascinating transportation history: from the 1925 fleet boat with a foldable fish crate, to a horse-drawn carriage from 1860, to the unusual “Karriol” of the era, you learn how roads in Altes Land developed – long before road building became common.

Additionally, you discover an extensive collection of furniture, traditional costumes, and jewelry that bring to life the lives and society of the region over the last 200 years. A visit to Aunt Rosa’s colonial goods store invites you to experience everyday life from 1920 to 1986.

The museum also tells the story of early firefighting history, historic stagecoaches, the introduction of water and electricity, as well as regional shipbuilding and port facilities along the Elbe – all supported by numerous models, photos, and original documents.
