Preußisches Regierungsgebäude
Description
The Preußisches Regierungsgebäude impresses with its monumental neo-Romanesque style and, with its asymmetrical corner towers and the bossed tuff stone facade, resembles a medieval castle – an exciting destination for families and children who enjoy castles and history.
Special highlights are the sculptural artworks on the river facade: copper statues of Saint George and the allegories of viticulture and shipping by the Cauer brothers add artistic accents and invite exploration.
Inside, you will find a magnificent staircase and vaulted halls richly decorated, which make the building’s uniqueness. Its almost intact survival through World War II and careful restoration preserve the historic character of this cultural treasure.
Since 2002, the government building has also been part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site – underlining its importance and making a visit a special experience.
A landscaped garden with a basalt stele commemorates the fire that destroyed the old building and its rebuilding – a lovely place to relax and learn fascinating history outdoors.
