Stiftsmuseum
Description
The Stiftsmuseum offers you an exciting journey through time with archaeological finds from the Neolithic period through Roman times to the Middle Ages. Particularly impressive is the extensive collection of Roman artifacts from the Limes forts along the Lower Main River.
You can discover richly furnished grave goods from Alemannic and Frankish row burials dating from the 6th to 8th centuries. A special highlight for young visitors is probably Germany's oldest game board, the "Chessboard of Saint Rupert", which invites you to explore historical games.
The museum is located in a historic building complex with sections dating back to the 12th century, built around a Romanesque cloister. Here you will find several original monastery rooms preserved, including the chapter hall from the 12th/13th century, the Gothic hall from the 13th century, the paraments room with colorful stucco from 1723, a former monastery prison, as well as the canon’s room and a new chapter hall with original furnishings from around 1620 – an enthralling medieval atmosphere to dive into.
