Description

Schloss Johannisburg is an impressive Renaissance castle (1605–1614) by Georg Ridinger and dominates the city skyline – perfect for shared discovery trips and family photos. 🏰

Inside, the building brings together the Schlossmuseum und die Staatsgalerie, including works by Lucas Cranach d. Ä., Rubens and Dutch-Flemish masters – the Staatsgalerie was 2023 freshly renovated and features renewed galleries that can introduce children to the old masters.

The Paramentenkammer also displays richly embroidered liturgical vestments – ideal for children who find fabrics and costumes exciting. From the courtyard you see the two-story Schlosskapelle with continuous windows and a lavish portal. The dramatic history (fire damage 1945 and reconstruction until 1964) gives older children something to discuss about restoration.

  • Symmetrical four-wing building, courtyard with 51 m side length and eight-story corner towers (ca. 52 m) with octagonal domes.
  • Treasury of old masters: Cranach, Rubens and Dutch-Flemish works.
  • Paramentenkammer with richly embroidered vestments and precious textiles.
  • Two-story Schlosskapelle visible from the courtyard.
  • Historic coin minting 1614 with an image of the castle – a small fact for young explorers.
