Description
Records from Martha von Arnim (née v. Schlegel) show that the grounds and its tree population have been protected for centuries. Old maps from 1870 reveal that there was an animal enclosure near Voigtsgrün. It belonged to Alexander von Arnim, who kept red deer here. Around 1890, the hunting lodge, now the Blockhaus, was built. In 1909, Arno von Arnim, the brother, inherited Voigtsgrün and with it the animal enclosure.
The foundation for today’s Tierpark was laid in 1956. The originally about 6-hectare site includes trees up to 450 years old. Today, the Tierpark administration is located in the Blockhaus.
Visitors can look forward to several highlights:
"Eulerei"
In the "Eulerei," which visitors can enter, you can get up close with native owls. The facility offers barn owls, tawny owls, barn owlets, and long-eared owls plenty of space to fly across 200 m².
"Bärenland"
Our 9,000 m² outdoor enclosure for brown bears and wolves, reopened in 2006, provides natural living conditions for our largest predators. The visitor terrace offers an unobstructed view of the entire enclosure without bars.
"Affenhaus"
This houses four species of monkeys, including the rarely kept black macaques found in zoos. The young rhesus monkeys always bring lively fun for visitors.
"Fasanerie"
The "Fasanerie" is home to many native birds such as little owls and jackdaws, as well as exotic species from macaws to siskins. Game birds and pheasants can be observed year-round in the beautifully planted enclosure.
"Polaris"
An enclosure inhabited by Arctic foxes and snowy owls, providing information about the displacement of species from their polar habitat.
Our coatis will soon have a new enclosure called "Rüsselsheim."
For our little guests, there are two playgrounds in the park, a mouse house, and a rat cellar that you should definitely take a look at. Children’s birthday parties can also be booked here.
Food services, playgrounds, a mini-golf course, and a bowling alley ensure especially families with children have a varied and fun visit. You can find information on current events on our website: http://www.tierpark-hirschfeld.de/.
