Description

Chiemgau-Impakt is a fascinating Bavarian meteorite crater field that formed about 2,900 to 2,600 years ago – during the Bronze to Iron Age.

This extraordinary event was caused by the impact of an asteroid or comet about 1 kilometer in size, which broke apart in the atmosphere and created an impressive airburst on the ground. This formed a field with over 100 craters, some up to 1,300 meters wide.

The scientific traces are diverse: shock metamorphism, impact glasses, polymict breccias, microtektites, as well as rare minerals like gupeiite, xifengite, and moissanite all testify to the dramatic nature of the impact. Even traces of tsunamis in Lake Chiemsee point to the powerful double craters on the lakebed.

Modern digital terrain models reveal detailed crater shapes with finger-like structures, multiple rings, and terraced rims – very much like craters on the Moon and Mars. Especially impressive are large crater groups like Brunnensee/Griessee with complex forms or Obing with symmetrical profiles and finger-like rims created by hydrodynamic effects.

A thrilling destination for anyone fascinated by history, geology, and cosmic events! 🌠
