## Brief description

Discover the Cranach-Häuser with their historic courtyards in Wittenberg: Here, the world-famous Renaissance artists Lucas Cranach the Elder and his son Lucas Cranach the Younger lived and worked in the 16th century.

## Description

The two Cranach-Häuser and courtyards in Wittenberg are fascinating places where Renaissance art and Reformation history come together. Here, in the heart of the historic old town, lived and worked Lucas Cranach the Elder and later his son, Lucas Cranach the Younger, who are among the most important artists of the German Renaissance. In 1505, Lucas Cranach the Elder answered the call of Elector Frederick the Wise to the Saxon court in Wittenberg. He lived and worked here for almost 50 years, creating paintings now displayed in the world's most renowned museums.

The actual historic site is the Cranach-Haus with courtyard at Schlossstraße 1 by the market. This historic location was once the residence but above all also the workshop of the Cranachs and their students. Many famous works of Reformation art were created here. When you enter the courtyard, you can feel the atmosphere of a bygone era in which art played a central role. Many famous personalities of Wittenberg had their portraits made by the Cranachs here. The lovingly restored courtyards invite you to linger. Especially exciting: The Cranach-Hof is still a lively place of art today. An artists’ collective uses the historic spaces to continue the artistic heritage. Workshops, modern exhibitions, and creative projects bring the spirit of the Renaissance to life again. Here you have the chance not only to dive into the past but also become part of Wittenberg’s vibrant art scene.

In the Cranach-Haus, Markt 4, Lucas Cranach the Younger was born. Cranach the Elder ran a printing house here together with Christian Döring, where among other things Luther's Bible translation was reproduced. Today this building houses a museum with the exhibition “Cranach’s World,” offering you not only a view of the famous Cranach painter family but also highlighting the artist’s roles as an apothecary and printer during the Reformation era.
